My experiences as a mummy coupled with my knowledge of nutrition led me to dive deeper into weaning to truly understand what mums need to know to give their babies the best start in life. My intention is to provide you with the correct, evidence based information, the reasons behind the advice and allow you to make an informed decision on how you wish to feed your baby.

My weaning story

It might help you to know that I’ve been in your shoes, I breastfed my first baby till his first birthday, he started solids at 5 months and loved it! Weaning progressed beautifully and he was quickly on 3 meals a day. This was great; he was doing exactly what I expected for successful weaning. But as a toddler we discovered that he was anaemic. He hadn’t been getting enough iron. I was giving him red meats, pulses, fortified breakfast cereals, green leafy veggies and dried fruits…I thought I was doing it right. I was shocked! I was a paediatric dietitian after-all; this is what I did for a living! But he loved his milk. He was a guzzler and on reflection I probably used the boob as dummy too. He was having too much milk and was not hungry enough to have enough food at mealtimes.

My second baby was no easier, she was a reluctant feeder. She was tiny. Had eczema and reflux and required constant clothing changes after near continuous vomiting! Moreover she didn’t gain weight ninth way that you would expect. It turned out that she was allergic to egg, and food (and my breastmilk) made her feel ill. She hated feeding and food. Once I identified the problem food and cut it out of both our diets, her eczema disappeared, she stopped vomiting and began to thrive! She’s still a fussy eater now, reluctant to try new foods and has taught me a thing or two about managing picky eaters too.

How do I know that the information you give me is right?

Well I'm asking you to trust me on this one, I'm a Registered Dietitian which means that I'm regulated by law to only give out evidence based advice, I'm not allowed to influence you in any way and I must give you a balanced view of both sides of the story so you can make an informed choice.

Why should I do a course when I can get this information from my Health Visitor?

In can't get the full depth of information that I've got for you from your Heath Visitor. HV's are amazing and do a fantastic job but they are not nutrition professionals. Most area’s buy in weaning courses that are not written by nutrition professionals. And HV’s get their nutrition training from us registered dietitians!

This is more than I would pay for a book on weaning - why should I pay more?

In a book - even if your fortunate to find one written by a Registered Dietitian (most are written by mums who have been there, but without a nutrition background) - you will get one persons view on weaning, the books are high on recipes and low on advice. You also have to find time to sit and read it. My course is created in short bitesize video's containing balanced advice so you can watch at your own convenience knowing the info you get is top notch!
